Automated vs Manual Directory Submission

Automated directory submission typically utilizes some form of software to submit your site to hundreds of directories at a time. In contrast, manual directory submission is done entirely by hand, one directory at a time.

Automated directory submission can mass submit your site to vast numbers of directories with just the click of a button. The main appeal of this type of submission is the potential for time saved.

Proper placing is key to successfully submitting your site. Automated software typically requires you to input one set of information, which is used repeatedly, and one or two categories. The problem with this is that not all directories are the same and there are often differing categories.

Directories have actual human beings who review each site to determine whether it should be included. Automated submissions are often submitted under the wrong categories because the software used is not capable of evaluating the categories. The relevant editor will dismiss your site without even reviewing it. In a worse case scenario, they may even see it as spam and your site can be blacklisted.

This is why more and more webmasters are choosing to go with manual directory submission. Yes, it is tedious and terribly boring. Yes, you will probably have to type the same information over and over again. Yes, you will have a better chance of having your site accepted by the directories. Why? It’s elementary; you have complete control over the information that is submitted.

I’m sure you remember that I said all directories are not the same. Consequently, their submission rules and their general focus will be different. By using manual directory submission, you are in an ideal place to locate the category that is most relevant to your site and modify your information to suit the flavor of each individual directory.

In many cases, manual directory submission is the only option offered by the directory. This is done by the use of either an image confirmation (CAPTCHA) or an email confirmation. An image confirmation is that little picture with the alphanumeric code that you need to type in the box provided. Unless this is done, the submission will not be completed. Automated software can’t do that, nor can it respond to email.

Most of the major directories have either already adopted these methods, or are on the verge of doing so. Therefore, your automatic submissions will probably only end up being successfully added to link farms as opposed to reputable directories. If you really want to get your site added to the leading directories, the best thing that you can do is submit them manually. The time spent will be more than worth it in the end.

Directories - do they help?

There is a growing discussion among webmasters whether it is worth it to submit to the directories. Some says it helps, while others disagree. Some think that it's not worth to spend a lot of time to submit sites to a large number of directories, claiming that it's worthless.

Those who disagree say the following:
---Search engines have essentially replaced directories
---Listing from general directories is poor link building through links only
---Niche directories help better in ranking well and with some free traffic
---Though some directories are good, most others are useless

Those who are in favor of directory submissions say directories are helpful to boost page rank and in generating unique website traffic, if:
---The submissions are done manually
---If directories are search engine friendly
---If directories have good page rank
---If submission is made to relevant category

Submitting to website directories takes only a few minutes, and can never really hurt you.

Now if you take a closer look you can see that no hurt is caused from directory submissions. It's only time that you have to spend. In return you can expect what all webmasters are seeking: traffic and better search engine position in the rankings. Not all free directories are bad. If you don't submit it won't hurt you, but you could miss a potential opportunity. On the other hand, if directories actually show up as results for the terms you are optimizing for, submitting to the directories is the same as submitting to the "niche directories".

So if you're considering submitting but time holds you back, you can outsource the directory submission job to a group of people or company somewhere else in the world where labor is lower. If you do a quick search in Google, you can find a lot of directory submission service providers who do an excellent, efficient job. All you have to do pay a small amount and the job will usually be finished in a number of days.

How will you know which directories added your site?

I think presently Yahoo is better option as it displays the accurate nubmer of links. Whereas Google purposely does not report accurate link data with their link: command.

With yahoo 's Linkdomain:url.com command you can get all the pages that link to any page hosted at the domain url.com

Google counts backlinks whenever they are found, though it never shows all of them. But backlinks contribute to placement.

Just keep getting your backlinks and monitor your SERPs for how well you are doing. Its SERPs bring you traffic not the PR and PR means absolutely nothing in the final analysis.
