Information you will need for directory submission

For both free and paid directories, you will need following information

  • URL

  • TITLE

  • DESCRIPTION

  • KEYWORDS

  • FIRST NAME

  • LAST NAME

  • ADDRESS

  • CITY

  • ZIP

  • EMAIL ADDRESS

Here are some guidelines to prepare the necessary information

URL:
When entering your website URL,some directories require you to include 'http://' , while others don't. Follow the instructions given there. This is important because many systems create your listing automatically and without the http:// your link may not work, while in the other directories your site may not work with 'http://'.

TITLE:

In any case a good title should never exceed 4-5 words. Using a long list of keywords as title (keyword stuffing), excessive repetitions and inappropriate punctuation must be avoided.

It is good to alter the title and description while submitting to different directories. Have multiple tiles of 4-5 words each. Avoid excessive repetitions and inappropriate punctuation in the titles.

DESCRIPTION:
Links are evaluated using the link description. Prepare the description in such a way that it matches the site.

Directories vary in the number of words they will accept in a description. Thus, when you write your descriptions, write 7-, 10-, 15-, 20, 25-, 30- and 50-word descriptions. Make sure, the most important keywords are in every description, but do not try and stuff too many keywords into the description.

CATEGORY
Your web site needs to be in the most appropriate category. IF you don't submit to the right category, then yours will be discarded.

When selecting the most appropriate Directory category to submit your site to, conduct a search for your main keyword phrase and view the various related categories.

Study the sites listed within these categories and choose the category that is most relevant to or closely related to your site content. Some directories like ODP have specific Category Descriptions you should read before submitting, to ensure you have chosen the most relevant topic for your site.

EMAIL ADDRESS:
Many directories require an email address to allow them to verify your listing better to use a free email address instead of a company one to avoid thousands of spam mails.

Create a text file with all of the submission information on it, and cut and paste this information to the boxes on the submission form. This will save time and will reduce the likelihood of spelling errors, which may cause your site to be rejected.

Note that your directories frequently change their editorial policy , make sure you read the submissions guidelines before you submit the site .

Manual directory submission is very time consuming and a boring task as well. You could outsourcing the job to a low cost area and devote your time to other important tasks of operating the business.

Link popularity is the single most influential factor for determining how well a web site will perform in search engine rankings. A web site's link popularity is computed from the number and more importantly, the quality of links pointing to a web site.

Directory Submission

Submitting your link to directories is an excellent way to build your web site's link popularity and improve search engine rankings. Lisitng in free directories like Dmoz is of great importance. Apart form dmoz there are various other small and big free directories where you can submit your site. This helps you in getting links from subject related to your website.

Listing approval:

Listing to the directories does not guarantee that your site will be listed. Editors have their own policy to add or reject sites. Web directories are swamped by a large number of low quality submissions: poorly designed web sites, web sites without any original content or created only to display advertisements and so on.

For this reason directory editors review hundreds of sites per day and accept only those complying to a very strict set of guidelines. More than 90% of submissions are rejected, in many case without even the need to visit the site simply because of a poorly written submission.

As links from directories are considered permanent , the submissions to the directory should be accordingly. If you do your it poorly yourself, you might be hurting your site long term. Doing it wrong is worse than not doing it at all.

Manual diretory submission
If you want to increase your chances to see your site listed, it's essential to understand what informations you are required to provide about your site and how to properly submit them. Manual directory submission could help you to increase your chance to be listed. Following submission guidelines exactly you could increase the chance.

Time consuming:
Directory submission is more difficult - and takes longer. Just as most professional webmasters do, so should you. They hire professionals that have experience in a particular topic or service, such as directory submission, and pay them a flat rate to accomplish such a service.

Especially when you start your business afresh and you take it as part time business , in that case you can not afford two things : wasting your time for such a time consuming jobs when you have a better option and doing anything impoperly.

Outsourching such time consuming jobs you could engage your time for more important things youself should do like planning, managing, directing etc.
